what to wear to NYFW: the working girl's guide
If you’re working New York Fashion Week, you’re there to WORK, however, you can still be chic. Whether you're working the shows or attending them, what you wear sends a message. I've done both — and after a couple years in those rooms, I've learned exactly what works and what doesn't. Here's exactly what I wore across three days at NYFW this past February and how to steal the looks.
A Note Before We Jump In:
If you're working the shows: All black, always. This isn't a suggestion - in production, PR, and styling it's the dress code. You're there to make the clothes and the talent shine, not yourself. But all black doesn't mean boring. Here's how I kept it chic and functional:
Tailored black trousers over leggings (it’s incredibly cold getting to the shows, better to layer up and shed when you arrive!)
A medium sized tote big enough for a few snacks, my water, and extra sewing supplies
Black, comfortable ankle boots with an actual sole - long hours on your feet are no joke
What I Wore:
Outfit: Sheer black top layered under a black mini dress with tailored trousers and my go-to combat boots.
Why I chose it: The perfect blend of comfort and structure.
What I'd do differently: Choose a top that isn’t as tight around the collar!
What I Wore:
Outfit: Cozy black turtleneck sweater with boot cut black slacks and a cute pair of ballet flats.
Why I chose it: I had one quick event and wanted to grab a nice dinner after, the flats helped dress it up.
What I'd do differently: Add insoles to my shoes!
What I Wore:
Outfit: 3/4 length black top with tailored black slacks, my go-to combat boots, and trusty wool jacket.
Why I chose it: I was working multiple events in different parts of Manhattan and wouldn't have time to go back to change - comfort was key.
What I'd do differently: Pack a bigger bag for more snacks!
VIP of all VIP’s:
This styling kit is everything you will need to succeed while working your first fashion show. No matter if you’re helping a small show or on a runway in Paris, these are essentials to working behind the scenes. You’ll never know if you’ll be sewing a button on a. dress for Prabal Gurung or snipping loose threads for Michael Kors!

What I learned about dressing yourself for Fashion Week:
Comfort is a strategy. You're walking miles. A stunning outfit you can't move in is a liability.
All black is a uniform, not a limitation. When you're working, own it - elevate it with texture and fit.
ALWAYS bring your styling kit. This is non-negotiable and will help you be taken seriously in the industry.
Bring your water and snacks. Not all shows have food backstage for dressers. Be prepared.
Dress approachable. I’ve seen so many dressers try to outshine the models. You’re working, remember?
